ABOUT THE BOARD
This is a classic Santa Barbara example of a balsa longboard shaped by John “Ike” Eichert, a legendary local shaper. During the transition from balsa to foam, many surfers still preferred the weight and feel of balsa, even going so far as to pigment their balsa boards white so as not to appear out of step with the times. Ike stuck to shaping balsa longboards longer than anyone in the region. Balsa surfboards were significantly lighter than boards shaped from hardwoods, and would soon be surpassed by foam.
